Braced Excavation Example: Diaphragm Wall with Steel Struts (3D Model Design)
This example presents the 3D model design of a 30ft excavation with a reinforced concrete diaphragm wall braced by two rows of struts. The model and analysis have been prepared with the DeepEX - Shoring Design Software, using the classical Limit Equilibrium Analysis method.
A. Project Description
This design example presents a case with a 3D deep excavation model. Two independent 2D Design Sections of a 30ft excavation with reinforced concrete diaphragm walls braced by two rows of struts have been originally generated. The 2ft thick diaphragm walls in the 2D sections are used, in order to simulate all the walls in the actual project perimeter.
The 3D model is generated with the 3D Model Wizard of our DeepEX software. In the example video we illustrate how the 3D excavation model is created, how to edit the generated perimeter in order to simulate the actual project surface and how to perform the 2D and 3D analysis and review the results.
The analysis is performed with the Limit Equilibrium Analysis method.

C. Braced Excavation (3D Model) Analysis and Cost Estimation Results
DeepEX can perform full structural and geotechnical design of all project items (walls and supports). The calculated results (soil and water pressures, wall moment, shear and displacement diagrams, support reactions, structural and geotechnical check ratios and more) can be presented both in tables and graphically on the model area. DeepEX can analyze and present results for all construction stages, allowing the designer to review the full project history and take important decisions for the most efficient model optimization.
DeepEX 3D can also perform total cost estimation for the whole project, taking into consideration all possible parameters (labor and materials). The cost results (Total Cost vs Construction Stage and Partial Costs for Supports, Walls, Excavations, Dewatering etc) are presented in tables when the 3D Model analysis is completed.
